Vaaranam Aayiram – Review

Its my maiden effect in posting the review of a tamil movie!🙂 It would be good if you can share your comments on this and it would help me improve!

It happened to be my 100th post in this blog🙂

Vaaranam Aayiram [‘surrounded by 1000 elephants‘ in english – the terms taken from the old song ‘vaaranam aayiram soozha valam seidhu’, though the literal meaning is just ‘1000 elephants’] – An excellent movie packed with emotions, sentiments, feelings and of course a great lesson on how to take life and move on with it amidst of all events occurring around! Though tried to watch in on the very first day (nostalgic of college days.. huh) could just get the bulb after rushing into the theater [Garuda Mall,Bangalore] as the tickets were sold off! Though we managed to book it via SMS, they should have to be bought before an hour of show time it seems!

Somehow got the tickets for the next day in Innovative Multiplex, Marathahalli, Bangalore (15 November 2008 Saturday]. Was heavily impressed and moved with the movie.

Surya in Vaaranam Aayiram

Surya in Vaaranam Aayiram

Gowtham Vasudev Menon: The director of the movie has definitely done his best. This movie is a gratitude to his father it seems. The first time his name in full has been mentioned I believe. I felt really glad that he did NOT disappoint me as that of his previous-and-recent movie ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’.

The director seems to have paid enough attention to the story and screenplay and definitely he accomplished the mission. The movie is a flashback type and visual effects really adds value to the scenes. The movie definitely has a strong message about how to go on with life amidst all odds! Hats off Gowtham🙂

Surya (Krishnan) – Dad Role: His flash back comes for a short span and there he has the punch for the entire life span of the character. ‘Do what your heart says‘ type of attitude. He follows and preaches the same to his kid(s) and let them do the same🙂. A good idea to propose a girl was given to audience. Simran (Malini) keeps hearing from everyone around saying ‘Krishnan wanted to convey that you are very beautiful’‘. And their first meeting is beautiful and lasts only for a minute and proceeds to the song ‘Mundhinam paarthaenae’. The smile he wears all through the movie is a trademark.

The way he understands the kids and works with them for dealing with their day-to-day routines, issues is to be really appreciated. That’s how almost every kid wants. Nowhere he gets tensed though it may be next-to-impossible in practical life. One remarkable track is when he pacifies his son surya about reminding his school days as how he won the match by converting all his negative feelings (hatred nature and anger) to a positive energy!! Deserves to get an applause!! Message conveyed by Gowtham via the film!

The smile is a little special as it has so many things in it – patience, understanding, care, affection etc.,! Even when lying on the death bed! Awesome.. Way to go Surya:)

Surya – Son Role: The Hero of the movie has done a splendid performance. Awesome expressions man! Be it the dance, fight, romance – all rounder and gathers an appealing score! One excellent track not-to-be-missed and worth mentioning in the movie is the love track between Surya and Sameera. Though he tries to almost always imitate his father). The initial expressions and reactions he shows when meeting Sameera for the first time in the train is wonderful and romantic !! You may fall in love with the track for sure! Later how he reacts to the events and how he proceeds in taking up the life is what the rest of the film conveys! In the overall movie, he utters the word ‘Dad’, ‘Daddy’ more than 200 times I believe🙂. The character is of that kind.

His school life scenes are very close to reality and no cinematic effects. Like how we used to feel when you just had a clash with someone with no fault of yours, and the emotions related to that. He scores well in those scenes!

He did well in all the romantic scenes with Sameera! – Jothika, don’t miss🙂

His second love with Ramya (Priya) is again justified as he takes years time (5 years) to decide and still carrying the memories of Sameera!! Well acceptable in the reality and with the consequences.

Like Vishal in his ‘Satyam’, surya also has nicely developed a ‘six pack’🙂. Different costumes, emotions, expressions.. everywhere he hits a sixer!! For sure he is climbing the ladder! Keep it up Surya!

Surya and Sameera Reddy in Vaaranam Aayiram

Surya and Sameera Reddy in Vaaranam Aayiram

Sameera (Meghana): I fell in love with this character and the way she was portrayed! I never had a liking towards her till before watching the movie. Though looking like a pretty modern girl, she was a typical traditional girl respecting parent’s opinions regarding marriage, education etc., Her facial expressions get her the pass mark! She really did act in the movie and NOT falling in the yet another just-for-glamour-and-for-the-sake-of herione category. Lots of opportunities may definitely be in store!

‘What have you done to me’ – the dialogue which she starts off when accepting Surya’s proposal and revealing out her acceptance is very nice and a milestone! Adiyea Kolludhea Song is a nice beat and romantic duet!

Divya aka Kuthu Ramya (Priya): The real herione of the movie as she gets married to Surya has been given a role and chance. I think she did utilize to certain extent. Compared to her previous movies though the timespan of the character was NOT much she picked up well and did her BEST. But somehow Sameer’s role dominates Divya’s role for sure!🙂. But the attitude of the character was nice when she says, “I know you can’t forget Meghana and I would not want you to react to that. Still I love you”. A character without commanding and demanding and also waits for the approval of the same years together. One song for her is ‘Anal meale panithuli’ — sung by Sudha Raghunathan. Excellent one. Nice lyrics, music, voice. My 2 cents to {Harris Jayaraj, Thamarai} team🙂

Simran (Malini): Father Surya (Krishnan)’s wife role is played by Simran. Though she is there in almost all the scenes, the role was NOT that powerful and influential. Perhaps the movie is much of saluting and expressing the gratitude to the Dad! But few places she justifies her existence! She reminds the kids about how their dad wants them to be in their life even after his demise. That’s yet another message. ‘Life has to move on’.

Plus

Not to deny, all songs are nice and the visual effects really added values and more worth to the songs! Both the surya characters plus Sameera really did well and has contributed considerably.

Good lessons of life has been neatly portrayed:

1. Life has to move on no matter what

2. Life(time) is the best healer for every wound!

3. Do what your heart says.

4. During tough times, convert your negative thoughts to a positive energy!

Minus

1. A slight frustration comes when you see everyone in the home speaks in english mostly in the home! and you get a doubt on the language of the movie! Gowtham could have paid a little more attention here!

2. Most audiences may disagree with the father surya’s approval of sending his son surya to USA (Berklyn University) to just search for his love! A slight justification/excuse is he does this after completing his commitments. Still, how many parents would agree and allow such activity? Perhaps, children doing such activities without the parent’s knowledge – that is out of discussion here😉. Again, listen to your heart and may be for the ‘real and true love’ its acceptable!? Might be!

Vaaranam aayiram – has definitely created a deep impact and yet another milestone in Gowtham’s films. Worth watching it!

    Well,

I would have made a big mistake, reading your blog for the review!( Thank GOD I watched the movie before🙂 ).

This is not a review ragHs!

A great write up though… I could relive the whole movie while I read through your blog.

    As usual you roCk Sir!

I am sorry though for refusing to come to the movie🙂

I just finished watching the movie in my personal home theater.

I partially agree with the contents of the review. The movie is definitely watchable. The end purpose of the whole venture is actually served with good screenplay and foot tapping numbers.

As you have discussed all the roles thoroughly in here already I wouldn’t be telling anything about that.

The movie had lot of english content in it( It was easy enough for anyone to understand the movie🙂, i mean the non – tamil crowd; briTs would definitely agree on this🙂 ).

The movie has lot of things which I felt was artificial and gave a comic touch to it.(good if that was intensional/intended).
e.g the train scene where he first meets sameera.. it is cute though!

And sameera is unbelievable.. has done justice to the role and so has ramYa. Simran was good , I guess they had to pull someone who fit that position and simRan was a ready candidate for that LOL🙂

Coming to the protogonist of the movie, he has done well in both the roles. Hope he continue’s to don new roles i near future. Great Surya! (Have not said that to anyone else apart from Vijay!).

The story has lot of un-digestable moments, like surya flying to US and especially the scene at the consulate LOL.

Romance is top notch in the movie….🙂
like the song Adiyea Kolludhea, it rocks!!!!!

The movie is overall a one time watch for me, for many I guess (apart from those who want to watch sameera over and over again🙂 )
Definitely a 3.5 – 4.0 for the story and the screen play.
Full marks to SurYa who pulls the whole movie together, Harris music disappointed me little bit though.

Lets see what others have to say…

The first half of the movie is really good but the second half is a drag and really disappoints. The first ten minutes of the movie puts people in a dilemma making them wonder whether they have come to a English film made by Tamil blokes(Notice the oxymoron here!). It did not blend well with the rest of the movie.

    Quintessential performance from Surya though.

Good review through ramification of characters.Good work Raghavan.

A different dimension.. lol :p Not just brity (briTs) I also would agree with it. But it would have been a different version then to target non-tamil audiences sir..

//Great Surya! (Have not said that to anyone else apart from Vijay!).//

That’s nice. But comparing to vijay — hehehe😉 he was doing well .. Remember ‘he was’.!
