Vaaranam Aayiram – Review

Its my maiden effect in posting the review of a tamil movie! 🙂 It would be good if you can share your comments on this and it would help me improve!

It happened to be my 100th post in this blog 🙂

Vaaranam Aayiram [‘surrounded by 1000 elephants‘ in english – the terms taken from the old song ‘vaaranam aayiram soozha valam seidhu’, though the literal meaning is just ‘1000 elephants’] – An excellent movie packed with emotions, sentiments, feelings and of course a great lesson on how to take life and move on with it amidst of all events occurring around! Though tried to watch in on the very first day (nostalgic of college days.. huh) could just get the bulb after rushing into the theater [Garuda Mall,Bangalore] as the tickets were sold off! Though we managed to book it via SMS, they should have to be bought before an hour of show time it seems!

Somehow got the tickets for the next day in Innovative Multiplex, Marathahalli, Bangalore (15 November 2008 Saturday]. Was heavily impressed and moved with the movie.

Surya in Vaaranam Aayiram

Surya in Vaaranam Aayiram

Gowtham Vasudev Menon: The director of the movie has definitely done his best. This movie is a gratitude to his father it seems. The first time his name in full has been mentioned I believe. I felt really glad that he did NOT disappoint me as that of his previous-and-recent movie ‘Pachaikili Muthucharam’.

The director seems to have paid enough attention to the story and screenplay and definitely he accomplished the mission. The movie is a flashback type and visual effects really adds value to the scenes. The movie definitely has a strong message about how to go on with life amidst all odds! Hats off Gowtham 🙂

Surya (Krishnan) – Dad Role: His flash back comes for a short span and there he has the punch for the entire life span of the character. ‘Do what your heart says‘ type of attitude. He follows and preaches the same to his kid(s) and let them do the same :). A good idea to propose a girl was given to audience. Simran (Malini) keeps hearing from everyone around saying ‘Krishnan wanted to convey that you are very beautiful’‘. And their first meeting is beautiful and lasts only for a minute and proceeds to the song ‘Mundhinam paarthaenae’. The smile he wears all through the movie is a trademark.

The way he understands the kids and works with them for dealing with their day-to-day routines, issues is to be really appreciated. That’s how almost every kid wants. Nowhere he gets tensed though it may be next-to-impossible in practical life. One remarkable track is when he pacifies his son surya about reminding his school days as how he won the match by converting all his negative feelings (hatred nature and anger) to a positive energy!! Deserves to get an applause!! Message conveyed by Gowtham via the film!

The smile is a little special as it has so many things in it – patience, understanding, care, affection etc.,! Even when lying on the death bed! Awesome.. Way to go Surya:)

Surya – Son Role: The Hero of the movie has done a splendid performance. Awesome expressions man! Be it the dance, fight, romance – all rounder and gathers an appealing score! One excellent track not-to-be-missed and worth mentioning in the movie is the love track between Surya and Sameera. Though he tries to almost always imitate his father). The initial expressions and reactions he shows when meeting Sameera for the first time in the train is wonderful and romantic !! You may fall in love with the track for sure! Later how he reacts to the events and how he proceeds in taking up the life is what the rest of the film conveys! In the overall movie, he utters the word ‘Dad’, ‘Daddy’ more than 200 times I believe :). The character is of that kind.

His school life scenes are very close to reality and no cinematic effects. Like how we used to feel when you just had a clash with someone with no fault of yours, and the emotions related to that. He scores well in those scenes!

He did well in all the romantic scenes with Sameera! – Jothika, don’t miss 🙂

His second love with Ramya (Priya) is again justified as he takes years time (5 years) to decide and still carrying the memories of Sameera!! Well acceptable in the reality and with the consequences.

Like Vishal in his ‘Satyam’, surya also has nicely developed a ‘six pack’ :). Different costumes, emotions, expressions.. everywhere he hits a sixer!! For sure he is climbing the ladder! Keep it up Surya!

Surya and Sameera Reddy in Vaaranam Aayiram

Surya and Sameera Reddy in Vaaranam Aayiram

Sameera (Meghana): I fell in love with this character and the way she was portrayed! I never had a liking towards her till before watching the movie. Though looking like a pretty modern girl, she was a typical traditional girl respecting parent’s opinions regarding marriage, education etc., Her facial expressions get her the pass mark! She really did act in the movie and NOT falling in the yet another just-for-glamour-and-for-the-sake-of herione category. Lots of opportunities may definitely be in store!

‘What have you done to me’ – the dialogue which she starts off when accepting Surya’s proposal and revealing out her acceptance is very nice and a milestone! Adiyea Kolludhea Song is a nice beat and romantic duet!

Divya aka Kuthu Ramya (Priya): The real herione of the movie as she gets married to Surya has been given a role and chance. I think she did utilize to certain extent. Compared to her previous movies though the timespan of the character was NOT much she picked up well and did her BEST. But somehow Sameer’s role dominates Divya’s role for sure! :). But the attitude of the character was nice when she says, “I know you can’t forget Meghana and I would not want you to react to that. Still I love you”. A character without commanding and demanding and also waits for the approval of the same years together. One song for her is ‘Anal meale panithuli’ — sung by Sudha Raghunathan. Excellent one. Nice lyrics, music, voice. My 2 cents to {Harris Jayaraj, Thamarai} team 🙂

Simran (Malini): Father Surya (Krishnan)’s wife role is played by Simran. Though she is there in almost all the scenes, the role was NOT that powerful and influential. Perhaps the movie is much of saluting and expressing the gratitude to the Dad! But few places she justifies her existence! She reminds the kids about how their dad wants them to be in their life even after his demise. That’s yet another message. ‘Life has to move on’.

Plus

Not to deny, all songs are nice and the visual effects really added values and more worth to the songs! Both the surya characters plus Sameera really did well and has contributed considerably.

Good lessons of life has been neatly portrayed:

1. Life has to move on no matter what

2. Life(time) is the best healer for every wound!

3. Do what your heart says.

4. During tough times, convert your negative thoughts to a positive energy!

Minus

1. A slight frustration comes when you see everyone in the home speaks in english mostly in the home! and you get a doubt on the language of the movie! Gowtham could have paid a little more attention here!

2. Most audiences may disagree with the father surya’s approval of sending his son surya to USA (Berklyn University) to just search for his love! A slight justification/excuse is he does this after completing his commitments. Still, how many parents would agree and allow such activity? Perhaps, children doing such activities without the parent’s knowledge – that is out of discussion here ;). Again, listen to your heart and may be for the ‘real and true love’ its acceptable!? Might be!

Vaaranam aayiram – has definitely created a deep impact and yet another milestone in Gowtham’s films. Worth watching it!

A thought on ‘Taare Zameen Par’

Taare Zameen ParStars are on the earth [in english]

Well, this happened to be the very first movie i watched in a theatre after 3 months of my stay in bahrain. Although i was not really interested in going to a theatre, somehow today i thought let me accompany my friends. But atlast, had a very great satisfaction that i had watched a life time movie. I am sure you also would feel the same 🙂

TaareZameenPar - Image

Taare Zameen Par – initially i din’t have enough to think of except the great personality Aamir Khan as he has been really rocking nowadays in the way he portrays his thoughts. Just to name a few movies to prove his worth are Lagaan, Rang De Basanti etc.

I got to know the entire story line after seeing the one line caption in the title itself which says “Every child is special” :). Totally could picturise and imagine the theme and was really astonished the way the scenarios were portrayed. It was produced and directed by Aamir Khan. The main hero in the story is an 8 year old school going kid “Darsheel Safary” who really rocked and took over the entire show in his control. Awesome performance and he definitely deserves to get a bunch of applauses. Man, in the whole movie he would have just spoken a few words. Rest everything he expressed in his facial expressions which are sure enough to fetch him some awards! Great going master.. That was a wonderful experience watching you in the screen.

TaareZameenPar-2

The movie starts off with an 8 year old boy who is marked as totally disobedient, disinterested towards reading and writing. You have enough fun when you visualize those situations as definitely every class has some sort of students. Though he has some special interests in painting it is left unnoticed when compared to all the mistakes. Because of all these he tends to become an introvert gradually and thats when he starts expressing all his feelings through just emotions. He does not even speak to his mom except a few places when he refuses to join the boarding school once his parents decide after hearing an “excellent” report from the teachers and principal of the school.  As usual, his elder brother is a very good exception who is studious and stands first in all subjects along with his extra-curricular activities as well. This adds fuel to the fire naturally as the way parents tend to compare their children when they grow up.

Even after joining the boarding school, the same history repeats and he feels as if he is tortured literally and he started hating the entire world including his burning desire for drawing. There you get a break through our supreme master, a much awaited character in the movie our dear Aamir who enters as a temporary drawing master. A different kinda approach he has towards the students as the way he freely allows the kids to think out of the box and enjoys being with them as a good mate by all means.

As you would have expected by now (if at all you could :)) , he identifies this strange behavior and finds our the root cause and helps getting this little boy out of his difficulties after taking some pains in talking to their parents and colleagues. He also convinces the principal by saying the reason as the kinda disease “dyslexic” [a learning disability especially feeling difficult in identifying the alphabets] and also requesting him to offer only one chance as all that the little kid needs is a little more attention from the teachers. He tries out to bring out the kid’s potentials in all the possible ways.

TaareZameenPar-3

All his efforts come true and the boy is really identified of his hidden potentials as the result of the drawing competition conducted by Aamir for all the people in the school including faculties. The principal declares that he really got a chance to live his own childhood life again and also able to see other’s childhood as well. A way to thank Aamir khan he announces that Aamir khan will be working permanently in this school while continuing his tenure in the present school [‘Tulip School‘ – for mentally retarded people]. He also declares that the prize winning drawing would be on the front page of the school year book. As expected, the prize goes to our little master. The boy initially feels a little shy and reluctant. His neighbours help the principal identifies Ishaan (the boy’s name in the movie) in the crowd.  Not having enough patience to relish the moments when he gets the prize, Ishaan immediately runts to Aamir and hugs him and cries. 🙂 A masterpiece!

His parents come to school to take their kid for the vacation and they get to know about his talents and rewards. They feel very happy and overwhelmed as their worries are wiped off. They could see his son getting along with all the other children normally. The kid goes for a vacation along with his parents happily. The story ends there.

The noteworthy aspects of this movie are :

the overall theme

the little kid’s excellent acting

aamir khan’s character

all the songs

the way the kid’s creavity has been portrayed through which he intimates his separation from the family in his notebook that lets any1 get to know when they flip through the pages fastly – a kinda animation in which the younger son gradually gets away..

The boy’s entire family did well upto the mark. The songs were awesome and none of them seemed to be out of track. Every song had got a wonderful meaning and superb picturisation. In one song (last song), there is a line matching with the title, “Na Kho Jaayen Yeah Taare Zameen Par” [Let’s not lose these stars to earth”] – were fetching tears from the eyes whilst making us realize the importance of the childhood and its values irrespective of little difficulties and variance in efficiencies. 🙂

I would like to reinsist the thought as, “this is the movie which every student, parent and teacher has to watch without any fail“, as it has got a nice message to each of them. Don’t miss it. Of course,  the grown up students and ex-teachers may get a chance to get their histories kindled. I got a chance to remember one of my mom’s students [named ‘Thendral’ if i am right] who taught me to write the number ‘8’ properly as the two circles i used to draw always fought with each other :P.

One interesting background information to share which i heard through my colleague in the interval is "There were many children for audition but finally the crew managed to select 25 kids in the first round of elimination and then they made it upto 10 people after second and final round when they handed it over to Aamir Khan. He asked them to call the all 25 kids and he himself did a separate test and finalized this kid" it seems.

Note: If interested, kindly read the “Director’s Note” on the official website of the movie : http://www.taarezameenpar.com/. I would say, it is worth spending a minute on reading this to get to know the history behind this movie and the contribution by the people (Amole Gupte – the Creative Director of the movie who wrote the script and his wife Deepa Bhatia).

Great efforts and Hats Off to the entire team behind the scenes. You rock Aamir! This movie would definitely help and inspire the parents and teachers. I am sure about it. No doubt, it is yet another feather to your crown :). Best wishes to all your further endeavors too.

This happened to be my first ever review on a movie though my previous thoughts on some other movies dint get materialised. 🙂 Of course, this deserves for a nice movie which is a result of 7 years of research on the childhood! [“The Director’s Note” section from the official website of the movie].

sivaji – suspenses…

1. no double action for rajini, but only a getup change.

2. mottai rajini comes only in the last 20 mins as MG RAVICHANDRAN.

3. vivek is rajinis MAMA (vadivukarasis brother) and rajini calls him MAMA thoughout the movie.

4.rajinis styles in the movie: he throws the chewing gum on his hand and it rebounces into his mouth.in one scene he throws it on sumans forehead and it rebounces into his mouth.mottai rajini taps his head with his fingers.rajini says the word COOL throught out the moviemovie running time 3hours and 10 minssuman is the main villain and raguvharan appears in 3 , 4 scenes as the DEAN of SIVAJI UNIVERSITY, and hes the one who saves RAJINI.regarding the songs, rajini comes like SIVAJI, MGR and KAMAL in a comedy scene singing old songs like them.in the song ORU KOODAI SUNLIGHT 6 rajinis (with different hairstyles) will dance at the same time. it was SUPER!introduction sceneit is in the JAIL!!!!from there the FLASHBACK STARTS!!1. in the first half rajini uses a silver MERCEDEZ BENZ. he gives the car to PYRAMID NATARAJAN who is his ADVOCATE because he could not pay his legal fees.

5. in the 2nd half he uses a BLACK TOYOTA PRADO (director shankars own car) but in the car chase he uses a BLACK SCORPIO!suman is a big business man who runs institutions in chennai and hes got lot of political power. SIVAJI plans to open medical institutions and wants to give free education to everybody! thats where the problem starts!!

SUMAN asks RAJINI to start a shopping complex or to do real estate business, but he refuses.SUMAN takes away RAJINIS wealth including RAJINIS ROLEX WATCH and leaves him in the street. He asks him whether he wants a job in MTC bus as a CONDUCTOR. Finally he gives 1 ruppee coin and tell him to start begging.RAJINI decides to toss the coin and decide his future. If tails he will select POO PADHAI, if heads SINGA PAADHAI!! he tosses the coin and HEADS it is!!!the interval block is very well picturised!according to the police SIVAJI is dead and they want to know the secrets of SIVAJI and they try to open the laptop using MIMICRY artists (gud funny scene) they bring, Mayilsaamy, dhaamu and CHINY JAYANTH. but nobody can open it and the files get deleted!ADHIRADEE song the STYLE song will be the highlights of the picture. HATSOFF to SHANKAR AND RAJINI.

All the other songs are normal shankar style(nothing too special)The CLIMAX stunt is picturised well(similar to matrix). all the other stunts are normal shankar style. the car chasing stunt is too much of GRAPHICS.theres a comedy scene where RAJINI and VIVEK got shreyas house telling that they are coming from CENSUS office and after that semma comedy for 10 mins. HIGHLIGHT of the scene will be CHANDRAMUKIS RARAAA song.a punch dialogue by VIVEK- “six kku appuram sevenda! indha SIVAJIkku appuram yevendaa!!”

In the scene where KANAL KANNAN threatens RAJINI his hair would have been coloured in red patches. VIVEKS dialogue to RAJINI ” ivar thalaila yaaro KAARAKOZHAMBU oothitaanga pola!”

shankar has used the cellphone technology MMS in the films turning point. SUMAN and the inspector SHANMUGARAJAN(virumandi inspector) plans to kill SHIVAJI whose in the prison. ILAVARASU whose a constable in the same station covers the whole conversation in his cell phone and sends it to SHIVAJI while giving his food.Later SHIVAJI forwards it to RAGHUVARAN through MMS and he also leaves a message to his wife SHRIYA through MMS.

Sivaji – Pressmeet..

Chandra Babu Naidu watched the special preview of Rajnikant’s 15 June release ‘Sivaji’ at Prasad Labs preview theater today morning. Chandra Babu Naidu and Rajnikant spoke to the media after the preview is over. Here are the excepts –

Sivaji is about black money – Sivaji
Chandra Babu Naidu said, “Sivaji is going to create history in Inida. India has lot of talent and resources. But we are suffering with corruption and black money. Due to this black money, rich are becoming ultra rich and poor are becoming paupers. Sivaji film will be an eye-opener. Sivaji film combined entertainment with nice social message. Rajnikant is not only famous in India, he is an icon in Japan. I would say without any hesitation that Rajni is the most stylist actor in the entire India. I am a fan and friend of Rajni. Shankar who has a thing for social message oriented films has done superb work as director.”

NTR wanted me to use the film media to full extent – Rajnikant
Hero Rajnikant said, “Chandra Babu Naidu is one of my best friends. I promised him to show Chandramukhi on the release date and I could not honor it. I met Chandra Babu Naidu during the shoot of Sivaji. This time I stuck to my promise and shown him a day ahead of the release. Tamilnadu CM Karunanidhi watched Sivaji 3 days back and was very much impressed with it. Jayalalitha will be watching the film today evening at 6 pm in Chennai. I am planning to have screenings to YSR and Chidambaram as well. NTR told me long back that film media is the most powerful media. He wanted me to use this media to full extent to convey good messages to the masses. I am following him. The entire credit of the success of this film goes to Shankar. He has a zeal to make films that educate masses by mixing entertainment. We had been contemplating on working together for the past 10 years and it worked with Sivaji film. There will be entertainment and social message in this film.”

When asked about the craze Sivaji film has got this time, Rajnikant humbly attributed it to the almighty.
